Environmental Analysis

Health Care Trends is produced by the AMA Council on Long Range Planning & Development. Drawn from an extensive review of professional, governmental and nongovernmental sources, this report provides valuable information on forces shaping the health care system.

The 2010-2011 edition is being posted in segments throughout the year on the AMA Web site. Chapters on health inequities, patient expectations and perceptions, health economics, and public health infrastructure are also now available.

Of particular interest to recruiters, an updated chapter on Health Care Resources, covering physician supply, employment, and recruitment, with implications for rural communities and inner cities, is slated for release this summer. A new chapter, Trends in Physician Income, is scheduled for release in the fall. View/download a flyer (PDF) on this publication.

JAMA’s Medical Education Issue

Each year since 1901, JAMA has published a Medical Education Issue. Original contributions address some of the most important concerns affecting undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education today. Appendices provide a unique summary of training program data not readily available elsewhere.

Appendix I: Undergraduate Medical Education

Data are derived mainly from the 2009-2010 Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Annual Medical School Questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent in February 2010 to the deans of all 130 LCME-accredited medical schools with enrolled students and had a 100% response rate. Among data presented:

  • Enrollment for each of 130 LCME-accredited medical schools
  • Trends in enrollment by sex for 1989 – 2010
  • Other useful tables on medical school enrollment

    Appendix II: Graduate Medical Education

The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) maintain a database of information on graduate medical education (GME) training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and of the residents and fellows in them. Every spring this database of residents is updated. Tables in this appendix present data including:

  • Trends in numbers of programs and residents, specialty vs. subspecialty
  • Detailed distribution of residents on duty by specialty and subspecialty
  • Geographic distribution of residents by state/region relative to population
  • Citizenship status of International Medical Graduates
  • Race and Hispanic ethnic origin of residents, overall and by specialty
  • Citizenship/visa status of residents
  • Total program size and number of first-year positions by specialty
